Live Fast Magazine - 'Art Crush: Kristen Liu-Wong (NSFW)'
Kristen-Liu Wong’s art makes me feel like someone crawled inside my emotional epicenter, and dragged out kicking and screaming my most basic desires and fears. It gets me squirming inside of myself and I cannot look away. It has something to do with how she uses disparate feelings in the exact same space, overlapping and even complementing one another.
Her work has been described as both violent and explicit, but neither of these adjectives do her art justice. Her iconic paintings are bright and wonderfully grotesque. They are simultaneously delightful and unnerving in the best of ways. It is a pleasure to lose yourself inside of her world.
Wong is a soft spoken individual, perhaps not whom you’d expect. She idolizes artists like Grandma Moses, Margaret Kilgallen, and Lucien Freud. Her creations are made in a space where these influences meet her passion for Greek mythology.
Like most artists, Wong aims to make you think. When asked about her work she said, “There’s no one message for all my pieces. I definitely want to bring up ideas of human aggression and sexuality, female empowerment, etc. But I want the person who sees it to draw their own conclusions. I’m not here to tell anyone what to think.”
Like sexuality itself, her art is multifaceted and leaves a great deal to be unearthed by the individual.
